Toyota begs to differ on compact turbocharged engines, bets on larger engines for increased mileage

In the current auto industry of the world, one of the most popular trends is to develop compact and fuel efficient engines.  Reducing the size and capacity of the modern engines has become a great trend setter and the auto makers of the world are greatly using the newly developed compact mills even to run larger vehicles such as sports utility vehicles (SUVs). The primary reason to reduce the capacity of the engines is to enhance the fuel efficiency. The reduced size usually results in less power output that this is compensated by generally using a turbocharger.

Most of the auto makers of the world are thus very eager to build their own compact fuel efficient turbo charged engine to offer better fuel efficient cars to the customers. However, the globe’s largest car maker, Toyota Motors thinks different as usual. The pioneer of green cars and probably the most innovative car company, Toyota chooses not to follow others but lead with its unique thinking.

According to the reports, the senior managing officer in charge of drivetrain Research and Development at Toyota Motors, Koei Saga revealed to the media personals that though the company is still investing in the compact turbocharged motors, the company thinks that the gasoline can also become more efficient by increasing the capacity along with the incorporation of the Atkinson combustion systems.

Generally, the Atkinson cycle provides less maximum power output than the conventional Otto cycle of a combustion motor. This is why, the Atkinson cycle is being used on the hybrid vehicles at present as the low combustion power can be boosted up with the help of the electric motor.

Now, Toyota says that enhanced fuel efficiency can also be attained by increasing the capacity of the gasoline engines, while the large engines will deliver similar power to the small sized turbocharged efficient. In fact, the fuel efficiency of these larger engines would be better the smaller turbocharged units.

Saga also revealed his confidence on these larger capacity gasoline engines as a better alternative to the turbocharged engines and says that these can make for better fuel efficient mobility system. Toyota is usually right in its technological predictions and this one can be very true as well. Even in the present some automakers are already facing problems with few turbocharged engines that are unable to deliver the expected fuel efficiency despite the complicated development process and increased expenses. Thus, a lot more other auto makers may soon follow Toyota.

Toyota Motors also has plans to explore several other powertrain technology including the continuously variable transmission system, however, this one is for limited usage and would probably make way only in the hybrid vehicles.

Saga also adds that the next generation Prius model could also bring in a combination of lithium ion batteries as well as the nickel ones. Toyota is looking to use the best of the advantages of these two batteries, as lithium ion battery is great for performance and nickel batteries have better durability and life.
