Toyota works on huge cost cuts on its Fuel Cell vehicle

The world’s most selling car brand Toyota is an accomplished green vehicle pioneer. The Japanese car giant is not satisfied being the most eminent name in the field of the Hybrid technology and is constantly sweating over more advanced green automotive technologies.

Toyota seems to be particularly concerned about greener and cleaner mobility system for the future, may be because the company sells the most number of vehicles in the world and knows the amount of damage that its own vehicles are doing to the eco system with harmful emissions. The company claims that all this can change if it can sell large number of hybrid and other fully green cars in the world’s auto market.

Apparently the increasingly eco-conscious populace of the world would love to buy a green car rather than a pollution maker, only if it costs as much affordable. And this is exactly what Toyota is working on to make the world’s car consumers go green.

The first time mass producer of the Hybrid car, Toyota is now working to bring down the cost of the Fuel Cell vehicles. Just like the Prius Hybrid’s costs were slashed down over its newer generation models, Toyota claims it will do the same with its first Hydrogen powered vehicle as well.

Reportedly, a top Toyota executive has revealed that by the time the company’s first Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicle hits the production in early 2015, it expects to cut the production costs by half. Toyota expects to reduce the costs by half again by the year 2020.

The managing officer of Toyota Motor Corporation, Satoshi Ogiso says that this huge production cost reduction should allow Toyota to begin selling the Fuel Cell vehicle between $50,000 and $100,000.

Ogiso added that by 2020, Toyota expects to sell a fuel cell vehicle with a price tag that is similar to that of a plug-in hybrid car and more affordable than an electric vehicle.

Toyota’s upcoming fuel cell sedan is scheduled to debut at the Tokyo Motor Show in the next month, and will hit the market in 2015. This Hydrogen powered sedan is expected to have a cumulative global sale of around 5,000 to 10,000 units. This sale volume generation should help the company to reduce the cost of the fuel cell pack further, said Ogiso.

Ogiso explained that another cost saving factor on the Fuel Cell car is the fact that Toyota can adapt several components of its hybrid vehicles like Prius in the fuel cell vehicle with very slight changes.

However, Ogiso said that the Fuel Cell Sedan and the next-gen Prius Hybrid will not share the same platform, as the fuel cell vehicles are heavier than hybrids and have very different structure.

Ogiso further added that the upcoming Toyota Hydrogen Fuel Cell vehicle will have a range of around 300 miles on a full tank.

Ogiso said that Toyota wants its Hydrogen powered vehicle to be very distinctive like its first Hybrid car Prius, and it will have a very appealing design language.
