In a move that is likely to add some spunk and flavor to the Etios brand in India. Japanese carmaker Toyota will be showcasing the Etios Cross at the Auto Expo to be held in February in Delhi. Toyota has already begun testing the Etios Cross on Indian roads and is expected to launch it soon after its showcase at the Auto Expo. Toyota first revealed the Etios Cross in Brazil in 2013 November. Essentially, the Etios Cross is a more rugged and a sturdier version of the Etios Liva hatch from Toyota. The Etios Liva did not exactly stand up to its expectations and certainly did not set the sales registers ringing for Toyota. With the Toyota Etios Cross, Toyota is hoping that the car will fuel some excitement and zest into what is perceived to be a drab looking hatchback.
What differentiates the original Etios Liva from the Etios Cross is that the Cross sports brawny looking front bumpers as well as a more pronounced side profile cladding. The Etios Cross also features a new ten-spoke alloy wheels as well as new roof rails that completes the stunning look. The cabin of the Etios Cross is expected to get a black colored dashboard as well as plush seat fabrics and will be better equipped than the standard Etios Liva. It is also expected that Toyota will not be introducing any mechanical changes to the Toyota Etios Cross and they would remain much the same as seen in the standard Liva hatch. The Etios Cross will be powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine that will generate a maximum power output of 89bhp. It is also expected that Toyota might possibly offer the TRD Sportivo powertrain as well.
With the Etios Cross, Japanese carmaker Toyota will be taking on the recently emerged trend of promoting sporty looking editions of hatchbacks. Though this does not give much mileage to Toyota against popular compact SUVs like the Ford EcoSport, the Etios Cross would still be instrumental in taking the Etios brand to a new level altogether and make it look more posh and up-market. One can also expect that Toyota will price the Etios Cross at a fair premium price as compared to the standard Liva hatch.
Needless to say, the Toyota Etios Cross will be more powerful and an upgraded version of Etios Liva hatch. It will also get a 1.4-litre D4D Diesel Powertrain that would generate a maximum power output of 69 PS. Much like other cars in this segment, the Toyota Cross Etios also would get a cosmetic upgrade. The Japanese carmaker will be introducing changes to the car’s bumpers and add a roof rack and side running board to the exteriors of the car. New Cross Etios logo and alloy wheels will also be seen in the new car. As far as interiors are concerned, some subtle changes will be seen which include trim changes and color changes. In India, the Etios Cross is expected to feature a price tag below Rs. 10 lakhs.
