Toyota Kirloskar stops producing the Corolla Altis – All new model’s Indian launch expected to expedite

Toyota’s iconic premium sedan Corolla has been one of the most prominent and favored sedans in the Indian auto market, and its makeover is due for some time. In the international car markets, the Corolla has emerged in its new avatar with evolutionary aggressive design and more efficiency. However, its Indian counterpart’s launch has not been mentioned by the company. The Toyota Corolla was launch in India back in 2003, and was refreshed just once in 2008 with the new name suffix of Altis. Ever since, only special edition models of the Corolla Altis has been introduced in India. Toyota has even crossed the time frame of model overhaul for the Corolla, which takes place in every 5-6 years in all car models. The all new 11th generation Corolla Altis was expected to be launched no sooner than the end of this year. However, now its arrival is expected to happen earlier.

2014 Toyota Corolla Altis front view

Toyota has reportedly stopped the production of the ongoing Corolla Altis sedan in India, though there are no official announcements. This gives a strong hint of the 2014 Corolla’s arrival. It was already being speculated that Toyota Kirloskar Motors will unveil the all new Corolla at the upcoming Indian Auto Expo, and now it is thought that the new sedan will be launched soon after it’s unveiling at the event.

Usually, prior to the launch of a new generation model of a car, the company usually stops producing the older model as it has to cover a lot of ground level activities for the launch. The production of the older model of a car may be stopped several months ahead of the new model’s launch, and in this time the company clears the present inventories and makes space for the new model. About 400 units of the Corolla Altis were being manufactured at Toyota’s Bangalore plant. However, due to increased market competition, the Corolla’s demand diminished over time, and in December last year, only 156 units of the Corolla came out of the plant. The all new Corolla will be manufactured in Toyota’s second factory in Bangalore.

The ongoing Corolla model in India is an elegant and decent looking sedan but is not really praised for its looks. This is expected to change as Toyota has launched the new Corolla globally with much bolder and sharper looks inspired by the Furia concept. The new glamorous look comprises of aggressive front fascia with stylized headlights and fog lings, while bold curves and lines give the new Corolla a head turning appeal.

Mechanically, the all new Corolla in India is expected to feature the same old 1.8L VVT-i petrol mill and a 1.4L D-4D turbocharged diesel engine. Toyota might tweak the car’s mechanics for an enhanced performance and better suspension as its global counterpart.

Toyota should speed up the all new Corolla’s launch along with alluring features in order to aim for the top spot in the mid-sized sedan segment in India.
