Toyota saves 10-25 percent energy via shop floor innovation

Japanese automaker Toyota Motors attained 10 to 25 percent savings in energy by innovating with its skilled manpower available on the shop floor. Vice-chairman of Toyota-Kirloskar Motor and President, Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, Vikram Kirloskar added that the carmaker implemented in-house innovation, thus enabling it to bring down sheet metal pressing lines from the previous four to three. This led to dramatic energy savings and helped Toyota Motors to achieve 10 to 25 percent energy savings.

Vikram Kirloskar also had some advice for the metal forming and machine tool industry. He added that this sector should be making complete use of the present slowdown to enhance their productivity, efficiency and quality. He said that the carmaker adopted these three strategies at its second plan and this led to a significant improvement in its quality levels and also reduced manufacturing costs at the same time.

He opined that the industry should take full advantage of the current situation to opt for skill upgradation and retraining. He said that the sector might not get another such opportunity when demand grows.

Chairman-exhibitions IMTMA, Jamshed N Godrej added that increased interest is shown by overseas companies for investing in the Indian market. He was of the opinion that companies from Japan and Europe have realized that factories cannot be set up in China alone. Competition seen in global markets has given machine tool makers in India a golden opportunity to tap into the unexploited potential presented by exports.

IMTMA President L Krishnan said that even as the automobile sector goes through a slowdown, the sheet cutting and the machine tool industry has not reached the pinnacle of its curve, but there is still a silver lining as orders pour in from railways, tractor makers, aerospace and defense industries. Company spokesperson also added that Toyota Motors was able to achieve the impressive energy savings and increased steel yields as it decided to skill upgrade its shop floor personnel.

The auto-industry’s present slowdown not just in India, but in different parts of the world has had no whatsoever effect on Toyota Fortuner. This spunky SUV from Toyota continues to witness a rising demand in the Indian market. While other car makers are struggling hard to push their own offerings in this segment, Japanese maker Toyota seems to be sailing smooth as far as sales of Fortuner SUV are concerned. Fortuner registered a hike of 12 percent in sales during the period between April 2013 to November 2013 as opposed to the same period in the previous year. The Toyota Fortuner is in the market since 2009 August and ever since, it has been a much preferred SUV, which the high-end buyers in India much favor and adore for its robust looks and the Toyota badge. In India, the Toyota Fortuner strongly competes with the likes of Mahindra Rexton, Ford Endeavour, Hyundai Santa-Fe and Chevrolet Captiva.
