How does someone get an ad for a compact hybrid car to go viral? Well, if that someone is Toyota (selling to a Japanese market) then they run an ad themed around the iconic music sourced from one of the coolest games ever for one of its bestselling compact cars.
Toyota which also serves as Japan’s biggest carmaker internationally revealed its hybrid Aqua line, known as the Prius c. It’s a waste after all to treat driving as just going from Point A to Point B in the most boring way possible. One needs to look at it as the fun ride it has the potential to be. That is why it has come out with a new commercial that is going to floor everybody especially fans of Final Fantasy. With it, Toyota manages to evoke the spirit of adventure by making the cutest looking fleet of yellow hybrids you’ve ever seen run about the countryside. All the while a heavily recognizable song from a popular game plays behind.
Toyota has finally paid attention to design. Even though it is being packaged as a vehicle that is efficient and useful, it’s actually got a badass-looking front fascia. The wide variety of bright colours the model comes in allows buyers to be adventures. This has been lagging in other cars. The yellow colour shown in the video is bound to be popular among buyers.
The ad uses its association with Final Fantasy to its advantage. The melody sourced from the game that fans know plays all through the popular ad in the background, the cute Aqua’s drive on a dirt road through the plains and over hills (yup just like the Zeppelin song). Since Final Fantasy VII, the game whose music the Japanese adore, has only three adventurers and that is why the number of cars on the road is also the same.
With this ad, Toyota has finally hit the sweet spot that any marketer aims to hit. It fits right in with Japan’s very active videogame culture and ensures recall for days, since it is Toyota that came up with the idea to use a Final Fantasy song for an ad. Nobody expected Toyota to be this creative and relevant out of the blue. Way to go Toyota. Now if only the performance of the car matches the packaging, the carmaker will come out in spades.
