Toyota Kirloskar Motor, the Indian joint-venture of the Japanese auto major Toyota Motor is planning to launch a premium mid-sized sedan model in India soon. The very popular global Toyota Vios is sedan is expected to come to India in order to take the advantage of the very popular and growing Indian premium sedan segment.
Toyota already has its iconic Corolla premium sedan in the Indian car market, but it sits above the currently popular sedan segment and is considered to be a posh and expensive model. The Vios is going to be placed under the Corolla sedan and will be a direct rival to the likes of the immensely popular Honda City.
As per reports, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) has placed orders for the components of the next generation Vios model. Thus, the company definitely has plans to bring the all new Vios mid-size sedan in India.
The next generation model of the globally popular Toyota Vios sedan is being developed by Toyota Thai wing, with the Indian spec model in mind, according to close sources. The Vios is expected to be launched in India in January 2018.
The next-gen Toyota Vios will be powered by the two new engine choices of 1.6 liter petrol and 1.6 liter diesel motor, and the car will be imported to India from Thailand.
As per a source, the next-gen model of the Vios will be a full model change of the mid-size sedan which will be sold all around the global markets.
At present, the dominating leader of the upper C-segment of the mid-sized sedan, is the new-generation Honda City that was launched in January 2014. There are many greater sedan models fighting in this growing Indian segment, such as the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Hyundai Verna and the Volkswagen Vento.
When enquired, a Toyota Kirloskar spokesperson said that the company’s future product plans cannot be divulged.
As per some sources, while some previous reports suggested that Toyota would withdraw the Etios sedan from India by 2020 and replace it with the Vios, the company will actually not discontinue the Etios, though Vios will be introduced.
Toyota’s fellow Japanese car major, Honda has gone really far in terms of sales growth in India, and its City remains its bestselling product in its entire portfolio despite launching more new products that have also received success and popularity in the Indian car market. However, Toyota, whose cars are world acclaimed and bestsellers in many global countries, has actually not been able to make such a great impression on the Indian market. Toyota’s attempt to crack the mass market of India with its more affordable Etios sedan and Etios Liva hatchback twins didn’t work out owing to their lack luster appeal.
Now, Toyota wishes to bring a new contender to India from its tried and tested global portfolio in the form of the Vios in order to fight with the Honda City and the others in the segment, and to boost sales.
