Toyota reveals structure and price details of hydrogen cell powered car in Japan

Toyota revealed the production model of its hydrogen cell technology powered car at Japan on 25th June and stated that it will be sold at a price range of ¥ 7 million (yen). The car will be officially launched in Japan on April 2015 and later by May-June in other parts of the world. Presented at Tokyo Motor Show the car will be world’s first mass produced hydrogen cell sedan car built by Toyota. This Hydrogen Cell fueled car will be sold across United States at Europe at following prices $68703, £40464 and €50482. The government of Japan had encouraged all local carmakers to invest time and effort in fuel cell technology and Toyota was among the first to develop and use it on passenger vehicle.

Since Japan is setting up fuel refilling infrastructure these cars will be introduced in local markets first followed by California state in United States which is also setting up these structures followed by rest of Europe as and when they set up relevant architecture. Though a large part of its development cost has been underwritten by Toyota it will reduce its price is still high to keep it out of reach of regular car buyers. These cars will be preferred by people who regard cars as a long term investment and the returns it will give in the form of fuel cost savings and Toyota claims this FCV sedan can run for 435 miles on single recharge and 12 pounds of hydrogen fuel.

Toyota’s concept model which has been presented at this Tokyo Auto Show has also claimed that it can do 106 miles per hour and can accelerate within seconds like any other roadster. This model has been derived from Prius and is redesigned to look like a futuristic car with slim radiator grille below hood which is flanked by headlights section made up of tiny LED DRL’s and side indicators on ORVM’s. Sedan presented by Toyota appears huge by regular standards which is due to its mechanism which consist of 100 KW hydrogen fuel cell stack under seats followed by 100 KW electric motor. Machinery under hood consists of power electronics, electric battery pack followed by two hydrogen fuel tanks. Toyota expects to sell around 5000 – 10000 units per year of this model after launch.

The car’s lower front section below hood is made up air inlet area with black grille in fiber covering the area with triangular metal designs on its sides to hold the LED DRL fog lamp in vertical design on its sides. Developing this technology and model has taken Toyota nearly 20 years and initially it will be sold in only areas which have necessary refueling infrastructure. The government of Japan was keen on developing this technology as hydrogen can be easily produced using varied naturally occurring energy resources and on compression produces higher energy density than traditional batteries. Since its performance is similar to petrol engine it can run for 700 kms without refueling and emits only water vapor making it a zero emission car.
