Toyota brings the second generation Fortuner for test rides in India

Toyota India has finally imported the new 2.8 liter diesel engine that the new generation Toyota Fortuner will be using. The test phase for the new Fortuner will be starting shortly if it has not already begun. The Fortuner has been a successful model for Toyota and the manufacturer and with the restyling for the 2016 edition, the sales are expected to rise even higher.

The Company has been making the changes in the new Fortuner keeping in mind the changing requirements of potential buyers. The domestic market has been tracked according to the demands before the new Fortuner could be developed. The launch of the new Fortuner will be delayed. The car is not likely to be released in the market in 2016 but it will surely come in the market by 2017.

The new Fortuner is based on the Hilux platform and will be totally different from the current model. The 2016 Fortuner is modern in appearance and classy with the aesthetically designed front face. Let us take a look at what is in store for us.

Exteriors

The new Fortuner will have a chrome grille that will make the front fascia look stunning with the sleek headlights and LED DRL. The sides will get a kink on the C-Pillar and the rear end will have LED tail lamps to match with the rest of the exteriors. The new generation Fortuner will be a larger model which will be 90mm longer and 15mm wider. The height too has been decreased by 15mm for increased stability while the ground clearance has come down by about 30mm to 193mm.

Engine

The second generation Fortuner will come with a 2.8 liter diesel motor from the GD family that will give up to 175BHP and 420Nm torque. The transmission will have both, manual and automatic options with a 6-speed gearbox. There will also be a 2.4 liter diesel unit that will give up to 148BHP and 400Nm torque. The larger engine was brought to India for testing.

The second generation Toyota Fortuner has already been launched in the Australian market at $47,990. The Indian market will probably get the car at around the INR 20,00,000 price mark. In Australia, only the larger, 2.8 liter engine is available. The cylinders will have direct-inject turbo diesel pumps. The 2.4 liter unit may not make it to the Indian market either because only the larger version is being tested in the country as of now. But that is not evidence enough to rule out the possibility of both the variants being available in the market.

Toyota is a farsighted company and has known the Indian market for a long time. It will be wise to bring both the variants home so that the sales of the company can be spread out to two different target groups of buyers.

The car is likely to debut in India at the 2016 Auto Expo in February though the launch, as already mentioned, may or may not happen in 2016 itself. In the Indian market, he second generation Fortuner will be battling the Chevrolet Trailblazer, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and the 2016 Ford Endeavour.
