German car major, Volkswagen has launched its most awaited new car model this year – the Ameo sub-compact sedan in India on 5th of June. The new Volkswagen Ameo has launched with a starting price range of Rs. 5.14 Lakhs (ex-showroom, Mumbai). At present, the sub-4 meter compact sedan model will be available for sale in the Indian car market as a petrol only car and it comes in three model trims, namely the base model Trendline that is priced at Rs. 5.14 Lakhs, mid-level trim Comfortline tagged at Rs. 5.88 Lakhs and the top of the range trim Highline priced at Rs.6.91 Lakhs (all prices, ex-showroom, Mumbai).
The new Volkswagen Ameo is the car maker’s first sub-compact sedan model in the car market of India. Volkswagen is marketing the Ameo as a car that is made in India and made for India. The Ameo is the first India specific car to come from a German car manufacturer.
The new Volkswagen Ameo is based on the Volkswagen Polo premium hatchback model. The subcompact sedan gets powered by the Volkswagen’s efficient 1.2 liter MPI 3-cylinder petrol motor that also drives the Polo. This engine is capable of pumping out a max power of 74 bhp and 110 Nm of top torque, and is paired to a 5 speed manual transmission gearbox.
The diesel variant of the Volkswagen Ameo is also thought to be on the cards and is likely to be introduced at a later date. This could be after Volkswagen India has handled the recent huge diesel recall exercise.
Being based on the Volkswagen Polo hatchback, the Ameo shares the same design language of the hatchback and looks very similar to it. However, the newly launched Volkswagen Ameo comes with several new styling elements as well as exterior features such as projector headlamps, horizontal fog lights, new front bumper, newly designed alloy wheels and an entirely new rear design. The new Ameo also comes with an array of new features that are new segment firsts like – rain sensing automatic wipers, cruise control, front arm rest, Static cornering light and anti-pinch power windows. Apart from these class first features, the Ameo is also loaded with other great creature comfort features such as touchscreen infotainment system with Mirror link, I-pod connectivity, phonebook/SMS viewer, power adjustable wing mirrors with LED turn blinkers, tilt and telescopic steering wheel, cooled glove box, automatic AC with dust & pollen filter, rear AC vents and much more.
At the time of the Ameo’s introduction to India at the 2016 Auto Expo, Volkswagen had said that the car will set a new standard in terms of safety in the Indian sub-4 meter sedan segment. In keeping with the promise, the new Volkswagen Ameo sedan has been endowed with the best in class safety features as well that includes driver’s side and front passenger airbags as well as ABS as standard safety features across all variants. The car also offers rear view camera, fog lights and parking sensors to add to its safety quotient.
