Toyota Kirloskar Motor is considering the idea of setting up a new production plant in India due to the increase in demand for its car. The facility for production could situate near Hosur in Tamil Nadu state, and the operation may commence in 2016. The Japanese car maker intends to invest Rs 900 crore in the 2012-2013 fiscal year. The company’s main aim is to increase the production capacity in Bangalore to 3,10,000 units from 2,10,000 units and this is expected to be achieved by March 2013. The lower manufacturing costs in India has been benefited the company to export the Etios sedan to international markets, making it the company’s cheapest car model in the international market.
Toyota Kirloskar Motor is planning to set up a diesel engine plant in India, which will account for 80% of the company’s total sale in India. The initiative to set up a diesel plant has been considered in 2011, but the manufacturing of diesel cars is facing delay because the Indian Government was unclear on the issue of diesel pricing policy and was apprehensive about the additional tax on diesel vehicles. Mr Sandeep Singh gave a statement stating ‘’the increase in demand for diesel car from petrol compelled the company to set up diesel plants in India, instead of utilising engines imported from Japan and Thailand’’, and also said that the feasibility study is underway.
