The Japanese auto giant Toyota Kirloskar Motor has introduced India’s very first local made hybrid vehicle in the form of the all new Camry Hybrid on 28th of August, 2013. This excellent hybrid car has a starting priced at Rs. 29.75 lakhs (ex-showroom Delhi). The all new Toyota Camry Hybrid will be manufactured at a different assembly line in Toyota’s second plant in Bidadi near Bangalore. Thus, India has become the 9th manufacturing base for Toyota Hybrid cars in the globe.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM), Hiroshi Nakagawa said that Toyota is the pioneer of Hybrid technology and hence the company was interested in manufacturing the all New Camry Hybrid in India. This decision is in keeping with Toyota’s global viewpoint to encourage the adoption of the hybrid cars across the world, for a greener future. Manufacturing the Camry hybrid locally in India is another step of the company towards its global commitment of spreading green vehicles.
The all new Toyota Camry Hybrid is powered by a 2.5 Liter beltless petrol motor that is freshly developed exclusively for hybrid cars, along with a powerful electric motor. The engine and the electric motor together deliver a power output of 205 PS. The Camry Hybrid features the innovative Hybrid Synergy Drive that determines and automatically switches between the petrol engine and the electric motor according to the driving conditions. The all new Toyota Camry Hybrid packs in an Electronically Controlled Continuous Variable Transmission that offers improved performance, reduced fuel consumption as well as very less noise and vibration.
Toyota claims that the new Camry Hybrid has a fuel efficiency of 19.16 km per liter and emits just 122.8 gm of CO2 per km that is much lesser as compared against the conventional cars.
When the exterior is concerned, though the Camry Hybrid looks similar to its petrol counterpart, it comes with a lot exclusive features such as LED Headlights Radiator front Grill, new Bumper, Bezel Fog Lamps, Rear Fog Lamps, Auto Folding ORVM’s, 17” Alloy Wheels, Acoustic Glass and Hybrid Emblem and Hybrid Synergy Drive Logo
On its interior, the Camry Hybrid features 3 Zone Air Conditioning System for the comfort of all the passengers, ventilated front seats, power reclining rear seats, Power Tilt and Telescopic Steering Wheel Column with Memory, Hybrid System Indicator, rear window with power sunshade, Front seat collapsible headrests, Electro Chromic Anti-glare mirror, all 4 power windows along many other features.
The Camry Hybrids safety features include 4 airbags, Vehicle Stability Control and Hill start assist control with traction Control. Due to high price tag and the lack of government subsidies for greener cars in India, Toyota could sell very less of the highly acclaimed Prius hybrids. The Prius is sold in India as completely built cars and attracts over 100 percent custom duty. Thus, Toyota decided to locally manufacture the Camry Hybrid, though the car still has a high price tag due to lack of subsidies. The booking and deliveries of the car has started.
