The Toyota new Auris based 4×4 crossover has been spied recently when the vehicle was busy going about its test round on the roads. The new upcoming Toyota crossover has been spotted testing in Nurburgring in Germany, where all the sporty vehicles from the various auto majors sweat it out before market launch to ensure their great on road or off road performance.

Since the Toyota Auris 4×4 crossover still has a long time before it actually launches in the market, it is still in the early developmental stage. When the vehicle was caught by the spy shutterbugs, it was testing in an early developmental test mule. This new SUV from the house of the Japanese car major Toyota will be aimed at the extremely popular compact crossover market. The new Toyota baby crossover post its market launch will be placed beneath the very successful Toyota RAV4 in the global markets.

The spy shots of this new Toyota Auris based compact crossover has revealed that the vehicle’s design is also Auris based at least for now, as it will be heavily altered as it reaches closer to its final production ready stage. The closer inspection of the vehicle though fully camouflaged has also confirmed that this vehicle has a taller ride height.

The spy photographers who took the pictures of the testing Auris based crossover’s test mule at the Nurburgring, have said that the vehicle is rear axle is driven. However, the spy pictures do not show any rear differential to confirm the photographers’ claim.

Toyota sells an all 4 wheel drive option on the Auris in the Japanese car market. It is believed that Toyota will be offering its upcoming new baby SUV in both two and four wheel drive systems. This will enable Toyota to reach out to more consumers with various price and fuel efficiency requirements.

It still can’t be said whether Toyota would offer the Auris’ smooth Hybrid Synergy Drive gasoline-electric system on this new SUV.

It seems that Toyota is not at all interested in launching the Auris in India. Well, currently Toyota has a lot to deal with and we understand that the Japanese aren’t good at multi tasking, therefore, it is taking too long for them to consider the Indian car market. Perhaps, we wouldn’t be able to see the Toyota Auris on the Indian roads in the near future because Toyota already has many plans for us. Toyota Yaris, which sounds pretty much like the Auris, is also a compact hatchback and perhaps Toyota is planning to bring it here. I do not understand the nomenclature of these cars though. Toyota Yaris, Toyota Auris… maybe they named the both cars quite similar because they (tha Japanese) also look almost same. Anyways, the Yaris would hit the Indian shores next year and it is being anticipated that it will replace the Toyota Etios Liva.

We support the decision of Toyota of replacing the Etios Liva as it wasn’t doing any good in the domestic market. Perhaps, the Japanese would bring in the Toyota Yaris and put the launch of the Toyota Auris at the bottom of their To-do list, for now. Toyota Yaris would be a good experimental launch for the company. Toyota launched the Etios Liva a few years ago and entered the hatchback segment of the market. The company was trying to win the game here but it did not take long for Toyota to realize that they still have much to learn about the Indian market. The Etios Liva was not received well, especially from the youth of the country, who was the targeted lot of people.

For the time being, Toyota does not have anything big on its mind for India. It has not given any kind of information regarding the launch of the Yaris let alone the Auris. But if Toyota makes a move to re-enter the hatchback segment in the Indian car market then it is very likely that the company would pick up the Toyota Yaris first and if it did manage to win the hearts of the youth of the country then Toyota, perhaps, would bring in the Toyota Auris. As of now, there is nothing much cooking in Toyota’s facilities.

So, the wagon compromises on a mere 2 mpg and 2gm per km for a 200 litres of extra boot space. This should be a great choice for an Auris lover who also needs that extra cargo space.
As far as the interior is concerned, nearly everything is very similar to that of the Prius and Auris styling, except for blue edged floor mats. The cabin is ever so fresh, superior and classy.

The 2013 Auris Touring Sports Hybrid has got 4cm higher front seats with the steering wheel a little closer to the driver to enhance driving experience. It is very smooth and efficient thanks to its 100kW electric motor and its nickel hydride battery. It can take you a mile purely on the EV mode at a restrained speed. While going faster than 15mph the car’s 1.8 VVT-i petrol engine comes into action.

However being rather easy paced the Auris Touring Sports Hybrid is not actually even as close as fast as any sports car. The Toyota Auris comes with four engine options with both petrol and diesel variants. The variants will be equipped with a 1.33 litre engine with a brake horse power (bhp) of 98, the 1.6 litre petrol engine will have 130 bhp. The diesel variant produces 1.4 litre D-4D diesel producing a power of 88 bhp and the 2 litre D-4D produces 122 bhp and 1.8 litre petrol-elastic hybrid produces 134 bhp.

The petrol and diesel variants have a 6-speed manual transmission as standard. The hybrid will have an exclusive E-CVT automatic and 1.6 litre petrol variant and an option of Multidrive S CVT. The other important features include Hill-start Assist Control, Vehicle Stability Control, LED daytime running lights, seven airbags and the new follow-me-home lighting system.

The base trim model has automatic air conditioning, electric front windows, an audio system with USB, and Aux connection and MP3 file player and exterior mirrors which can be heated and electrically adjusted. The Icon trim model will have a 6-speaker audio system with DAB tuners, rear view camera, leather covered gear lever and steering wheel, rear electric windows, front fog lamps and so on. The hybrid will be fitted with a push-button start. Other available features will be Toyota Touch multimedia control screen with Bluetooth. The Sport trim will be fitted with a sport front seat, rear diffuser, grille, exhaust trim, 17-inch wheels, and a rear privacy glass. The Excel trim will have a dual zone climate control, Smart entry and Start, Cruise Control, park assist, electric folding mirrors, rain and light sensors, heated front seats and so on. The lumbar support will be provided for the driver’s seat.
