Toyota Motor India has said on 11th of April that a lot of its Corolla sold in the Indian car market will be called back for rectification. The Japanese car giant is operating on the Indian soil in a joint venture with the Kirloskar group and has made a global recalling of its premium sedan Corolla in order to sort out the defective airbags.
As for the Indian Corollas, Toyota Motor Corp revealed on Thursday that a select lot of the vehicle that was produced in India between January 2003 and June 2003 will be recalled, as this lot is said to contain defective or malfunctioning airbags.
Toyota Motor has already recalled 17.3 lakh vehicles globally in a bid to correct the faulty airbags, and this will also include the Indian counterparts. A Toyota Kirloskar Motor spokesperson said on Thursday that keeping in line with the recall that was announced by Toyota Motor Corporation globally, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) will recall the vehicles in India through its authorized dealers, who will contact the affected car owners.
However, the spokesperson also mentioned that so far the company has not received any complaint regarding the malfunctioning safety system of the Corolla. Nevertheless, TKM will carry out this campaign on a voluntary basis to check and rectify the problem, absolutely free of cost, he added.
As for the total number of affected Corollas in India, the spokesperson clarified that Toyota Kirloskar Motor is yet to find out and finalize the exact lot of vehicles for this recall. He added that the Corolla models that are included in this recall were produced in the country between the months of January and June 2003 only.
In a bid to provide a proper insight to the problem, the TKM spokesperson also explained that in this particular Corolla lot, the front passenger airbags might have been assembled with inappropriately manufactured inflator propellant wafers that would result in the malfunctioning of the airbags in the unfortunate event of an accident.
He explained saying “improperly manufactured propellant wafers could cause the inflator to rupture and the front passenger airbag to deploy abnormally in a crash”.
Toyota Motor is presently recalling a total 17,30,000 units globally. The vehicles include Corolla, Corolla Fielder, Yaris, Camry, Vios, Tundra, Avensis and other models as well.
However, only Toyota Motor is not facing the problem of the malfunctioning safety device, as two other Japanese auto giants, namely Honda and Nissan are also doing the same task. Thus, the three Japanese car makers are facing the same problem and are making a global recall of their vehicles to correct the airbag problem. However, Honda and Nissan cars in India are not affected by this particular problem.
As a means of confirmation, a spokesperson and a company official from Honda Motor Co. Ltd India and Nissan Motor Co. Ltd respectively, announced that the Indian cars do not form a part of these faulty airbag lot and thus, do not need to come under this recall exercise.
