Reputed auto builder, Toyota has recalled a major portion of one third cars for serving worn out parts. The company is bringing back around 1000 volumes of the classy sedan Altis model of Corolla to service the driveshaft. The re-service is mainly for the diesel models and for vehicles that have been serviced from August 3rd –Feb 14th 2013. The recall of the vehicles is to fix the problem of worn out driveshaft in few models. This issue of fixing the drive shafts will occur after a full blown inspection, and interestingly the entire service will be performed for absolutely free in just two hours.
The company has to re-invite 1,000 vehicles of the modern and sophisticated Corolla Altis sedan this April. These models were build years ago between January to June in 2003, the main concern here was to fix the problem that could make the side air bag to fill with magnificent force. This problem had to be sorted out in a whooping figure of 34 lakh models of established auto manufacturers of Mazda, Nissan, Toyota and Honda.
Last year itself, in 2012 October, there was a significant recall of 8700 vehicles of the exclusive Corolla Altis and Camry to fix important issues of dysfunctional power window master switch which could be a threat to occupants. This recall happened shortly when Nissan has to re-fix around 22,000 volumes of its trendy and tiny model, Micra and also the world class model of Sunny due to defective braking device.
The Indian Government has not formulated regulations on fixing recalled models, and this has made Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) to emerge with new and effective strategies to fix dysfunctional models with basic issues. Auto companies were disinclined to discuss faulty vehicle with the fear of negative back biting. The main reason for recalls is keeping the safety of occupants into consideration, and also stringent regulations in developed Western nations has caused an awakening to the Indian board to tackle such imperative issues.
Other powerful Indian companies such as Mahindra and Mahindra have also recalled models. The company has recalled its extremely popular model of XUV500 in March this year. The figure is pretty huge at 25,000 volumes to replace dysfunctional parts on the models released in 2011 and last year. Last August, the eminent firm, Ford India has to re-invite its ever popular hatch Figo, the figure was enormous here as well with more than 1.2 lakh volumes, and also the exclusive Fiesta sedan had to be fixed. The main concern here was the steering unit and rear suspension, if these parts were not dealt with, the safety of occupants would have been at stake with the incidents of fire.
It is an excellent move of Toyota India to recall its faulty Altis models and there should be stringent policies on recall of vehicles to fix worn out areas. Companies should ensure that the vehicles are fully functional before release and perform full-fledged quality assurance testing and clinical trails. The recalling of vehicles will benefit the company and consumers which could prevent herds of dangerous events.
