Brand new Toyota Etios Cross – First look

One of the growing car segments of India is that of the sub-4 meter compact crossover segment. The segment is soon going to have many new entrants by the auto majors operating in India. One of such upcoming models is the Toyota Etios Cross. The 2014 Etios Cross is a much awaited car model that is going to have its market launch in the month of May this year, and it is set to join in and heighten the competition.

The 2014 Toyota Etios Cross was unveiled in India last month at the Auto Expo 2014. Toyota has commenced the pre-launch bookings of the vehicle with a token money of Rs. 50,000.

The Etios Cross is Toyota’s off-roading contender that is based on the Etios Liva hatchback. Post launch, this vehicle will be locking its horns with the Volkswagen Cross Polo and the upcoming Fiat Avventura. Toyota is yet to announce its pricing, but it is expected to have a competitive pricing of about Rs. 7 lakhs.

Design wise, the Etios Cross has been endowed with a young tough appeal that Toyota has worked on in order to give it the appearance of a rugged off-roader. The vehicle looks contemporary and sporty and its added styling elements not only give it tougher looks but also add a trendier appeal. Toyota has given the Etios Crossover a bold front fascia with an aggressive looking front grille, a grille guards and the large bold fog lamps that are integrated with the turn indicators. The urban crossover also flaunts stylish roof rails, diamond cut alloy wheels, plastic rear claddings with logos and a roof spoiler. The vehicle’s exterior mirrors have integrated turn indicators, while its rear end gets a defogger with wiper. The Cross also comes with an exclusive Inferno Orange body color that adds to its visual vibrancy and youth appeal.

On the inside the Etios Cross gets more premium materials as against its hatchback counterpart. It gets piano black upholstery, sporty seats with contrasting white stitching, leather wrapped steering wheel with mounted audio controls, 2 DIN Audio with Bluetooth and USB and many more. It also offers great safety features of ABS with EBD and dual SRS airbags.

Under the hood, the Etios Cross will offer 3 engine options of a 1.5 liter petrol, a 1.2 liter petrol and a 1.4 liter diesel engine delivering 88bhp, 78bhp and 67bhp of power respectively.

The global car market is really booming with the rise of the crossover segment, in India the crossover segment is still coming up slowly, as the consumers cannot find much difference between the spacious hatchbacks and the crossovers much. This is true for the Etios Cross as well, which is essentially a decked up Etios Liva. Moreover, India has a great many new compact SUV models coming which are highly preferred. Thus, given a choice the Indian consumers would rather go for an entirely new compact SUV rather than a crossover based on a hatchback. Hope than the Etios Cross is successful in boosting Toyota India’s sales.
