The all new 2016 Toyota Prius hybrid expected to offer a massive 60 MPG

Hybrid pioneer Toyota Motor not only presented the world its first mass produced hybrid car in the form of the Prius, but also always made efforts to better the technology, while making it more affordable as well. Thus, over each generation model of the massively popular Prius, it has always offered more fuel efficiency and lesser price tags making the hybrids really appealing.

Toyota has been introducing each new generation Prius model with a 10% enhanced fuel economy. However, the upcoming next-gen Prius is going to be much better than its predecessors. Toyota is not only promising the next-gen Prius to have an all new stunning design, but also a stunning new mileage.

The next generation Toyota Prius is reportedly going to break new grounds in terms of massive fuel efficiency as well as low carbon emissions, and offer an astounding 60 mpg. Coupled with the incredible fuel economy, the all new 2016 Toyota Prius is also going to flaunt Toyota’s new heart racing design language that has been long pending for it.

So how is the next-gen Prius going to offer the fantastic 60 MPG? Enhancing the current powertrains will certainly not offer such a huge leap. Throwing some light on this matter, Toyota Motor has already announced some significant ways in which the 2016 Prius will accomplish the stunning return of 60 mpg.

Toyota Motor’s Managing Director, Satoshi Ogiso has stated that crossing 55 MPG is the goal set for the next-gen Prius. He said that the current Prius’ returns have improved by about 10 percent which has been the average thing for each generation of the vehicle. He also added that Toyota is going to beat its record and the next-gen Prius’ gasoline engine will also achieve higher fuel efficiency and will return 2% more than the current model. However, this cannot really achieve the mammoth 60 MPG on the whole.

In another separate announcement, Toyota Motor also revealed the next-gen Prius will be endowed with a new power electronics system. Toyota will use silicon carbide as the substrate in the vehicle, which will successfully enhance the fuel efficiency in hybrid by around 5 to 10%. This means that Toyota could be adding another 5 MPG with this new technology, but this too cannot deliver the massive 60 MPG.

In order to jump to the humongous 60 MPG, Toyota still needs to add around another about 10% more to the next Prius’ overall efficiency. This task seemed to be unattainable, till Toyota Motor Sport’s team principal, Yoshiaki Kinoshita revealed the capability of the super capacitor technology that the company is using in the endurance race cars and is going to be implemented into Toyota’s passenger cars. Kinoshita said that this system is 60 times better than that in the Prius, and if the company can successfully use the technology in the Prius, then the vehicle will be even better.

Thus, the 2016 Prius may involve lots of new technologies together to achieve the dream mileage of 60 MPG.
