The Indian automobile industry is going through a peak diversity era, firms are exploring undiscovered avenues. Honda has built its first time Mobilio MPV in India; Maruti Suzuki has plunged into compact SUV market for the first time with XA Alpha SUV, and has also dwelled into a rare segment on Ciaz mid sedan. Toyota is also working on a mid size luxury sedan to fight the cut-throat battle with all new Honda City.
The development of a new Toyota mid size sedan is not really unheard of, the Corolla Altis is a mega hit in India, the addition of Vios will build the diversity of the small yet premium mid size sedan segment in the country. The manufacturing process has started, and the arrival date is during the latter half of 2016. Vios is an exclusive launch, and there is so much excitement surrounding the vehicle. Representatives close to the company have said that the platform of Vios is inspired from Etios and is christened Etios Core or Etios C.
Etios C will be slated between Etios entry level sedan and the magnificent worldly fortune Corolla Altis. Toyota analyzed the feasibility outcome of the car in many sectors, and was firm with the decision to launch a mid size sedan few years ago itself. At the moment the known details are the construction of Etios C and its launch period. The company is working on the production of the car, and many more interesting details will surface later.
Toyota is the number one brand in the globe; the Indian unit does not have a strong sedan structure. Corolla is a best seller in the country and is in the most wanted luxury sedan list. The Indian subsidiary Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM), banked on Etios sedan to drive sales, although a fashionable sedan, the buying power with the car is not too significant. The hatchback variant of Etios, Liva is also not on the run. The company has made admirable fortunes in sport utility vehicle and multi-purpose vehicle market with Fortuner and Innova respectively.
The price range of mid-size sedan market is Rs 8 to 13 lakhs, it is not in the top selling segment range. The sale output has been considerably higher during the fiscal year that ended in 2014 March with the flow of 1.55 lakh units. To capture the thrones of the market, Toyota is eyeing a massive 40,000 to 50,000 annual sales. The company is banking on its new mid-size sedan venture to drive sales.
Earlier the mid-size sedan was a reigning market in India, the market share in this category has diminished to 1.55 lakh units on an annual basis. Over the past two to three years, there has been a voluminous demand for sport utility vehicles such as Mahindra XUV500, Ford EcoSport, Renault Duster and Nissan Terrano.
The mid size sedan in development is called Vios in markets of Southeast Asia, and is a blockbuster hit. The company never found a suitable medium to introduce the car in India. Vios is a high-tech luxury car and is among the most stylish in its segment and the interior fitments are first-rate. It is going to be a huge threat to Honda City.
