Japanese car major Toyota Motor is currently showcasing its popular global sedan – Vios at the 2015 Thailand Motor Show. The Toyota Vios has been a highly popular and appreciated family sedan model in several international car markets. Now, it has been known that Toyota’s Indian joint venture, Toyota Kirloskar Motor India has been considering bringing in the Vios to India in order to venture into the highly popular C-segment of the country.
The Toyota Vios is reportedly an India-bound car and if and when it launches in India (which is expected to be pretty soon), the car will be representing its maker in the highly popular and increasingly competitive C-segment of India. Currently, the Indian C-segment is dominated by the new-generation Honda City, while several other highly capable models like the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Hyundai Verna and Volkswagen Vento are also constantly fighting in the space.
Although Toyota is immensely popular in the global markets and its one of top car giants in the world, its Indian sales and growth have not been particularly impressive. Though Toyota’s highly capable hybrid models are gaining popularity in India recently, its other models including the revered Corolla have been witnessing quite dull sales in the country, making the company’s monthly sales plummet for a long time now. The Toyota Corolla Altis is a statement car even in India, but is considered expensive and sits above the popular C-segment that is yet to develop. Thus, Toyota India’s decision to bring in the Vios would be wise one, as this one will give direct competition to some of the hot selling cars in the Indian C-segment, which could substantially boost the company’s sales.
The Vios is expected to venture into the Indian car market early next year and is likely to be introduced to India at the 2016 Delhi Auto Expo. Under the hood, the Toyota Vios sedan is expected to get powered by a 1.5 liter petrol motor that runs the Etios or a 1.4 liter D-4D diesel motor which does duty under the hood of the Corolla Altis. Toyota’s C-segment sedan contender is likely to be having a price range of round Rs. 7.5 – Rs. 10 lakhs.
Being a premium sedan, the Toyota Vios will not be a sub-4 meter compact model and will measure 4,410 mm long, 1,700 mm wide, and 1,475 mm tall.
The Toyota Vios has been caught testing on the roads of Bangalore, near the company’s facility, which indicates its Indian launch. The Thai spec Vios gets an engine that can generate 107.5 bhp of power at 6,000 rpm and 141 Nm of torque at 4,200 rpm. The motor is mated to a standard 4 speed automatic transmission gearbox.
When launched in India, the Toyota Vios is expected to feature a smart entry system, projector headlights, automatic climate control, pushbutton start, an Eco meter, front dual airbags, ABS with EBD, anti-theft system and engine immobilizer. Toyota Kirloskar Motor India has yet not confirmed or revealed anything about the Vios’ launch.
