The Indian car market is deep under the grip of a massive slowdown, however there are still cars that are managing to negate the adverse effects of the market slump and emerge victorious. One such car models is the Toyota Fortuner Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV), which has managed to see boosted sales even in a situation when overall demands are low and the bigger SUVs are charged with additional excise duties.
The rising popularity of the Toyota Fortuner is really astounding in the current market conditions. Now, the Fortuner forms seven units out of every 10 SUV models that are currently sold in India in the Rs. 15 to 25 lakhs price bracket.
The latest reports reveal that the sales rates of the Toyota Fortuner SUV have witnessed a jump of 12 percent in the time period of April to November this year with the sale of 11,416 units as compared to the sales rates in the same period last year. On the other hand, all the rival models of the Fortuner SUV like the Ford Endeavour, Hyundai Santa-Fe, Chevrolet Captiva, Mitsubishi Pajero, Renault Koleos, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and Skoda Yeti have all witnessed lesser sales rates as compared to the figures of 2012.
The Mahindra Rexton and the Honda CR-V are the other premium SUV models in the mentioned price range that have experienced increased sales in the period of April-November this year as compared to the last financial year. However, the sales rates increase of these two models are negligible as compared to the Toyota Fortuner’s sales rates.
While speaking on the sales performance of the Fortuner SUV, Toyota Kirloskar Motors India’s COO of marketing and commercial division, Mr. Sandeep Singh said that the company has been always able to maintain the demand momentum for the Fortuner SUV ever since it launched in the Indian car market and has been able to further raise the sales rates in this year. The Toyota Fortuner can be described as the all-rounder complete SUV model, as this very capable and luxurious vehicle caters to the various needs of its owner.
In the Indian car market, the demand for the tough and performing SUV models had been increasing for the last few years. However, the steady rise of the diesel fuel costs and on top of that the Indian government imposing an additional 30 percent tax on the SUVs has really had their adverse effects on the SUV segment of India. The general inflation, plummeting rupee and instable economic condition of India have also ensured the lengthy stay of the car market slowdown that already has its effects on all the segments across the Indian auto industry. As a result, the SUV consumers have recently shifted their attention to the more affordable, compact SUV models like the
Ford EcoSport and Renault Duster.
Toyota sold over 57,500 Fortuner SUVs in India post its launch back in August, 2009. It is priced between Rs. 22.2 to 24.3 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi).
