With the launch of latest Corolla Quest family car in Africa, Toyota has added another car to its Corolla range which received its 11th generation model early this month. The Corolla Quest which has been specially created for South African markets is an affordable and spacious family car in typical Toyota style of smooth lines and wide bodied structure. It has been a standard practice with Toyota not to consign old models when new variants are introduced until demand for old model is non-existent. Therefore the original Corolla launched in markets during 2007 is still popular and during February 2014 its worldwide sales amounted to nearly 40.72 million.
In the past Toyota has been carrying forward designs of popular car model like the Tazz which was a budget hatchback based on five door Corolla model. This had been sold as a low cost entry model in South Africa for nearly five years before being discontinued. With the Corolla Quest, Toyota will be introducing a car for the first time in sub-C segment which will be the only car in this segment in Africa. The Corolla Quest will be sold in two variants in Africa namely standard and Quest Plus with standard safety equipment of engine immobilizer, airbags, alarm and central locking system.
In the past, new versions of Corolla introduced in Japan only and in different versions ranging from hatchback to sports coupes and also sedans. Corolla’s luxury version is called Auris and it was introduced for Japanese markets in early 2012 with V6 engine through Toyota Stores and discontinued in 2012. A compact MPV version of the Corolla also had been released in European and Japanese markets called the Verso and Spacio which was discontinued when tenth Corolla was released. The popular Corolla Matrix which is built on platform of E140 was considered a mix of hatchback cum sports-wagon and is sold in Australian and Asian markets. Over the years several version of Corolla have been sold across the world with varied names and badges in Asia, Australia, Europe and United States with slight variations in design and outlook depending on local demands.
The Corolla Quest will be powered by 4-cylinder 1.6-litre that generates 90 kW of power at 6000rpm and torque at 154Nm at 5200 rpm. The car can reach 100/kmph in just 10.4 seconds and can touch close to 192jm/h as far as max speed is concerned. The company have not released mileage figures as it confirmed it will be done close to the launch.
The eleventh generation Toyota Corolla was sold in Japan as Corolla Axio and its wagon version was badged as Corolla Fielder. Improved version now has a distinct design with V shaped chrome slats on radiator grille with Toyota logo which is available with both petrol and hybrid engine variants.
