Japanese auto leader Toyota Motor is working on its next-gen Hilux. The 2016 all new Hilux has been spied a couple of times while it was testing on the roads in Thailand as well as Australia quite recently. For all those who are not interested in the all new Hilux, it is good to mention that the Hilux’s platform is used by the premium SUV Fortuner, and the platform sharing among these two Toyota vehicles will continue in the next-gen models as. Thus, it can be very safely said that the next-gen Toyota Fortuner will borrow some of the styling and features of the next-gen Hilux.
Talking about the platform sharing point, it is important to mention that the next-gen Hilux pickup truck, Fortuner SUV and also the Innova MPV will all be based on the entirely new constructional layout of Toyota, which is known as Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform. The TNGA will the building philosophy of all the new Toyota vehicles ranging from small to big from the Prius hybrid to the Fortuner SUV. This new TNGA constructional philosophy of Toyota is meant to make the cars more appealing, engaging, stronger and fun to drive, and has been adopted to rival the new vehicle layout of the various global car majors such as general Motors, Volkswagen and Hyundai. All the new Toyota cars based on the TNGA platform are also expected to be lighter s compared to the previous models, while having better body rigidity and enhancing performance.
The bestselling vehicles such as the Toyota Innova and the Fortuner are major volume drawers for the Japanese auto manufacturer in India. Moreover, the Fortuner and Innova are both the leaders in their own segments in India, namely premium SUV and MPV segments respectively. Thus, the TNGA platform is very important for the new Toyota vehicles in India as well, as the next-gen Innova and Fortuner will both be extensively developed upon this new production platform.
Recently, the Indian presence of Toyota which is known as the Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) has announced that the company will no longer produce small, cost efficient cars in India, as the company could not crack the massive small car market in the country. TKM’s vice chairman mentioned that the company will only focus on bigger and expensive models like the Corolla, Fortuner and Innova. It is understood that Toyota is better off in India as a premium car maker and bags more profit on such vehicles than the low selling Etios and Liva cost efficient models.
The all new Fortuner that is also being developed will be enhancing all the best qualities that it offers. The SUV will become bolder looking, more premium, generously spacious and comfortable, come packed with a long list of new features and get powered by stronger powertrains. The next-gen Hilux and Fortuner are expected to hit the market in the second half of 2015, while the all new Innova and Fortuner are expected in India in 2016.
