It’s the battle of the ultimate premium sedans the Czech Skoda Superb and with the Japanese legend Toyota with its all new improved Camry. The Camry and Superb is here in India for quite some now and Camry got a facelift recently and Superb is here with the same version that is available before. Let’s get into the details of these two cars.

Exterior:

Toyota Camry: Camry looks excellent with its new designed grilles and headlamps. The new look made Camry more aggressive looking and that also with added class. The front grille has chrome finish to it. The fog lamps are stylish with chrome finish to it. The premium sedan has body colored side view mirrors to it with LED turn indicators to it. The side has simple finish to it but looks stylish and classy. The rear has also good finish to it with stylish looking rear lamps.

Skoda superb: Superb is also beautifully designed and looks classy the chrome used in the superb also looks stylish. The headlamps of the Superb are stylish and can even give the entry level BMWs and Audis good competition. The side of the car window has chrome added to it which makes the car classy. The rear of the car looks simple and the tail lamps can be seen from the far end.

Interior:

Toyota Camry: Toyota Camry has classy interiors with good leather seats that brings a premium feel to the car. The dash looks modern with futuristic looking instrumental cluster it also has a powerful AC and good entertainment system in it. The car has spacious interiors with good head and leg room in it. The car also has good storage space in it the seats are comfortable and has good thigh support is also has rear arm rest and bottle holder to it which are comfortable for long drives.

Skoda superb: Skoda is a 20lakh bracket sedan and Skoda also has added lots of up market goodies in the sedan. It has comfortable leather seats along with good spacious interiors it has enough leg and headroom for its passengers. The driver gets a tilted steering with audio mounted controls on the steering wheels. The car also has leather seats which looks fabulous.

Power:

Toyota Camry: the new Camry is powered by a 2.5 litre petrol engine which generates 178.bhp of power at 6000 rpm and maximum torque of 233Nm of torque at 4100 rpm.

Skoda Superb: Skoda superb has 1.8 TSI, 4-cylinder, 1798cc petrol engine which generates 160bhp of maximum power at 4500-6200 rpm and maximum torque of 250 Nm.

Safety

Toyota Camry: Camry has 6airbags six airbags (driver+ front co-passenger+ two sides + 2 curtains) which saves the passengers from a big impact. The Camry has solid frame to face any huge impact.

Skoda Superb: Superb has traction control to its cars and has airbags too.

Both Skoda Superb and Toyota Camry are good rivals in the premium sedan market Toyota brings the confidence and trust along with it. The Camry also looks more stylish than the superb and also has bigger interior space than its rivals.

Toyotas Innova has been the king of the ring for India so far because it had no such big threats to it but the now the arrival of the new Maruti Suzuki Ertiga has shaken things up quite a lot. Ertiga is now the top selling MPV of the market and has retained its position since then. The Toyota Kirloskar motors seeing the competition has taken steps against it and planning to launch a mini MUV to take on the Ertiga. But presently the Japanese manufacturer is keeping quiet and just saying that it might take the place for this segment in future.

The Ertiga is now the smallest MPV in the Indian market with length of just 4.2metres which is shorter than that of Toyota Innova and Mahindra Xylo. But still Maruti Suzuki has been able to squeeze in 5seats in the compact MUV and its still was able to fit luggage space in the car. This MPV is spacious enough to carry whole family and slim enough to fit in any parking space. To9yota has lined up lot of its new products for future amongst which there are many which are also targeted to low cost platform targeting emerging markets. Toyota is planning to launch 8new products from its Etios platform. Toyota also does not have plans to build a crossover on the Liva platform in the coming years. So with all the ideas we cannot throw away the fact that the demands of MPV are quite a demand in India and if anyone provides the people with low cost MPVs and enough features in it will surely be a hit.

Diesel powered engine dominates the MPV segment and Toyota does not have any1.4 Liter D-4D turbo diesel powered engine for its products. This also not the first time that we have heard that Toyota is planning to launch a MPV based on the Etios platform right from those days when Etios was launched but previously the MPV market was not so much in demand but when the market for the MPV is in Toyota should definitely think of bringing out something from their stable to compete with this recently launched MPVs .

The only MPV that Toyota has with them is the Innova which is great looks to it with all the comfortable features in the car. The front of the Innova has been given a low angular shape with stylish looking headlamps and they front grille enhances the classy look of the car with added Toyota badge at the front. The side view windows greats a new design which maintains the premium looks of the MPV. The rear tail lamps also get a new treatment to it and a chrome band which also enhances the look of the MPV. The interior of the Innova is up market with nice and comfortable seats and a good leg and head room space inside it. Innova is powered by a 2.0L, 1998cc, 1TR-FE, Gasoline, 4 Inline Cylinder petrol engine with EFI (Electronic Fuel Injection that generates 132 PS of maximum power and 181 Nm of maximum torque.

Today we compare the Chevrolet Beat with Toyota’s only hatchback, the Etios Liva. Both the cars are comparatively new in the Indian market and have been getting good response from the small car buyers. Coming from the portfolios of high profile players like Toyota and Chevrolet, both the cars are expected to provide great quality in both ride and built. Both Toyota and Chevrolet have had similar journeys in India and are now relatively stable in the market.

 

On the first look, both cars seem to have been made to cater to different kind of audiences. The Liva is made on a bigger chassis with a wide body and a long wheel base. The Beat on the other hand is the tall boy kind, with a shorter wheel base but greater ride height. Speaking about design, The Liva is the Gentlemen’s car, with is straight lines, plain design and colour schemes. It looks elegant and yet has a sporty feel to it with it rear and side profile. The sportiness of the Liva can also be seen in the Dirt prototypes used by racers in dirt conditions. It is a mature and elegant car with subtle style.

 

The Beat on the other hand is for the young boy. It has bold curves; sharp lining and the height give it a very sporty and adventurous look. The Beat looks more refreshing than the Liva but making a choice clearly depends on the consumer. On the Inside, the Beat is small as compared to the Liva. The Liva is more comfortable and spacious. It has good cushioned seats and the trademark good finish of Toyota. On the Downside though, the Beat is not as comfortable for 5 people as the Liva, with its wider body.

The Liva is powered by a 1.4Litre D4D CRDI Diesel engine, producing a maximum power of 67PS@3800RPM and a maximum torque of 170NM@1800-2400RPM. In overall performance, the Liva is better car to drive, with its more responsive engine and the reliability of the old and tested D4D engine. In terms of ride and handling, both cars are equally good but, the Liva with its longer wheel base has less body role and better control.

The Beat is priced from Rs. 3, 81,605 to Rs. 5, 86,751 (Ex. Showroom Delhi). Liva comes in the price range of Rs. 4, 09,998 to Rs. 6, 32,281. (Ex. Showroom Delhi).Being around the same price range, the verdict finally depends on the consumer. If he wants a modern hatch, which can seat 4 people and is a bit stylish, the Beat is the right choice. But, it he wants to seat 5 people comfortably and take longer journeys, not caring much about exterior looks, the Liva is the correct choice.

Toyota Corolla Altis can be treated as contemporary to Skoda Laura but Skoda Laura holds the market for long. The new Corolla’s styling and mines is to a good extend with the idea from Camry model. The Liva in terms of the convenience has electronic power steering, all door power windows, adjustable seat belts, keyless entry and a central locking system. The WagonR on the other hand lacks all of these features. It seems the WagonR is much more inconvenient as compared to the Liva.

In terms of the safety, both the cars have a ventilated disc brake in the front and a drum brake in the rear. Liva has anti fog headlights in the front and rear, whereas the WagonR has no such characteristic. The Liva also has an anti-theft alarm, rear window defogger and a seat belt warning.

The one point where the Maruti leads the Liva is in terms of service centers. The service and customer service provided for the WagonR is unparalleled. It is one of the biggest plus points for the WagonR. It has a wide range of spare parts that are easily available, and the official service centers will fix your car for cheap and in haste.

In conclusion, I would like to state that the WagonR is for the person who needs to travel in spacious comfort and requires the extra room for family etc. The Liva is better option in most aspects and is placed almost in the same price category.

The turning radius of the Micra is around 4.65-Meters, and the Liva has a turning radius of around 4.8-Meters. Even though this may seem to be somewhat the same in value, the difference of the 1.5-Meters could make parking on a really crowded road much easier.

On the exterior, the Micra have a rear window defogger that the Liva lacks. But Liva comes with wheel covers and tinted windows. Coming to the interiors, both the cars seem to have plush interiors. Priced at around Rs 469000 to Rs 491000; it provides various benefits in terms of comforts and luxuries. The Micra may be cheaper at around Rs 421000 but the difference in the price is justified by the lack of features.

In the heated segment of ‘hot hatches’ in India, The Etios Liva and the Renault Pulse provide a fresh rivalry. The rivalry between Toyota and Renault has come to India in the lower segment of cars. The Liva, the hatchback version of the Etios has a fresh look which makes it look bigger than the normal hatchbacks. The Pulse on the other hand looks a lot like the Micra but, the changed front end gives it a whole new dimension of aggression and dynamism. On first looks, it’s the Pulse that steals the limelight with its wide grill with the Renault logo in the middle. It has got all the perfect looks for a hot hatch and especially a Pulse with alloy wheels looks like a dirt racer.

 

The Liva on the other hand has a softer and subtle look. Coming from the Etios, the Liva has more of a family car feeling to it than the Pulse with its straight lines and elegant curves. Going from the exterior to the interior, both the cars somewhat disappoint the consumer with the usage of cheap plastic and dull colours. The Pulse has too many circles everywhere and fells a bit impractical. The Liva also annoyingly does not live up to Toyota standards and the extensive use of plastic and dull colours don’t let it get away from the cheap tag.

Under the hood, the Liva has a 1,364CC engine, producing a maximum power if 68PS and a maximum torque of 170 NM. The Liva takes 17.01 seconds to go from zero to a hundred kilometers an hour which is slow for hot hatches. The Pulse houses a larger 1,461CC engine, providing a maximum power of 64PS and a maximum torque of 160NM. Even though with less power, the Pulse is quicker to the hundred kilometer mark, completing it in 15.2 seconds which is way quicker than the Liva. Overall, it is the Pulse that has a better heart, which is more aggressive and responsive and makes the Pulse more fun to drive compared to its Japanese counterpart. Both the Pulse and the Liva feel a bit unstable a doing corners.

Overall, the Pulse if for the young user who wants more driving pleasure than the comfort of passengers and the Liva is for the young Indian family man who wants the reliability of Toyota at a good price.
